The Crusaders game in Christchurch was the turning point for the British and Irish Lions during the summer.
Up to that point, the Lions had scraped past a provincial Barbarians side before losing to the Auckland Blues. Many predicted that the undefeated Crusaders would add another loss to the Lions record but Warren Gatland’s side put in a hugely physical and impressive performance to emerge 12-3 victors.
Those 80 minutes will be fondly remembered as it provided the stepping stone to go on to draw the series against the All Blacks. However, there was one black mark during that 80 minutes and it was the serious facial injury suffered by Stuart Hogg.
As you may remember, Hogg was chasing a kick when his face collided full force to the outstretched elbow of Conor Murray.
The cut sustained to his face immediately started gushing blood and the Scottish fullback had to be removed from the field of play.
The upcoming release of the Lions DVD goes into great detail about this incident and they have released some footage from the film which shows the heartbreak Hogg experiences when he realised he was ruled out of the tour.
