All Blacks legend and all around nice guy Jonah Lomu was on BT Sport’s ‘Rugby Tonight’ and of course, that now infamous 1995 try got a mention.
If you score one of the greatest Rugby World Cup tries ever, you get a free pass to mention it at your discretion. And if you happen to appear on a TV show made by the same country whom you destroyed twenty years earlier, you get bonus points.
Jonah Lomu gives a great little nugget of insight into the build-up to the 1995 World Cup. Lomu describes how he was in effect, a caged animal and why Tony Underwood may just have spurred on that monster try.
I ended up lining up, and as your preparing to do the Haka you pick out a person, find some who happens to be staring. Locked eye contact. The problem was Tony gave me that one (the wink). And that was him just acknowledging that he accepts the challenge, he’s always admired it. But for me at that time my thing was, yeah you wink, you have accepted the challenge. But I’m going to wipe that wink off your face.
