During the 2014 Super League Grand Final, Ben Flower conducted one of the most vicious assaults ever seen on a rugby pitch…
Having failed to catch a bouncing ball that would have seen Flower going over for a try, the Welsh prop completely lost control of himself as he viciously attacked St Helens’ Lance Hohaia, landing two ferocious blows, with one punch coming while Hohaia lay unconscious on the pitch.
‘That’s a red card! I think Ben Flower’s Grand Final is over. There’s little doubting that Brian. That is a red card. Not once, not twice. Ok, he would have been frustrated by the fact that he could have scored a try. Instead, he took it out on Lance Hohaia.’
Flower was the first player to ever be sent off in a Grand Final while he was subsequently handed a six-month ban by the RFL disciplinary committee. Sadly, Hohaia also cited the incident as the cause of his early retirement as he retired the following year due to “recurrent post-match concussion-type symptoms”.
Flower has since stated that he regrets the horrific incident every day of his life.
