Rhys Webb Offered To Top Clubs In England And France [Report]

Wales and Lions scrum-half Rhys Webb is being offered to top clubs in England and France, according to reports in the French media.

The 30-cap Ospreys star’s national dual contract, which he signed in 2015, comes to an end in the summer, and there are sure to be no shortage of offers for one of Europe’s best scrum-halves.

Renowned French rugby site Midi Olympique (via Gavin Mortimer) ran with the story on Monday.

A product of the Ospreys’ excellent academy system, Bridgend-born Webb made his pro debut for the region way back in the 2007-08 season, going on to make over 150 appearances for the region.

A 2012 Pro12 winner, ‘Webby’, as he is affectionately known, is a key figure at the Liberty Stadium.

A real threat around the fringes, with an excellent pass and pace to burn, Webb has matured into a top-class operator.

The reports will be a worry for the Ospreys with fellow half-back Dan Biggar set for a move to the Northampton Saints next season, according to Wales Online.

And with the likes of Taulupe Faletau, Liam Williams, George North and Jamie Roberts already plying their trade outside Wales, the loss of another key player would be a blow to Welsh rugby.

But despite the fact that only four non-Wales based players will be able to be picked by Wales for the next two years under the so-called ‘Gatland’s law’, a number which will be reduced to two come 2019, the fact that Webb is one of Gatland’s key men means that any potential move outside Wales would be unlikely to put his international future in doubt.

Having spent the whole of his career in Wales, the scrum-half, who agonisingly missed out on the 2015 World Cup due to a foot injury, might feel that a move would be the right thing for him at this stage of his career.

And with England and especially France’s top clubs offering eye-watering amounts of cash, any potential offer may be hard for the Ospreys star to turn down.
