Sale Sharks Sack Player After Team Leak Allegations

Sale Sharks have today announced that winger Tom Arscott has had his contract terminated with the club.

The statement released on behalf of the club reads:

“Sale Sharks have today terminated the contract of Tom Arscott with immediate effect following a disciplinary investigation and hearing.

No further comment will be made in accordance with the club’s disciplinary procedure.”

It is believed that Arscott’s departure is linked to allegations of leaking team information to Bristol, where Arscott’s brother Luke is based. The pair met at Bristol’s team hotel the night before the west country side went on to defeat the Sharks 24-23 on New Year’s Day, a result that could prove vital to Bristol’s survival in the Premiership, but could also help bring Sale into a relegation battle with their opponents and fellow league strugglers Worcester Warriors.

Bristol have denied that Tom Arscott revealed anything of “any sporting value” to the team, but the Sharks have launched an official complaint to the RFU.

Mark Tainton, Bristol’s interim head coach, said that he was not concerned about the matter and believed his club had done nothing wrong (via the BBC):

“We have yet to hear from the RFU about this. From what we are aware, we are entirely confident that Bristol Rugby has done nothing wrong and we have not acted in a way that is against the spirit and values of rugby.

“Tom and Luke met on New Year’s Eve at the team hotel – which is not unusual for families living in different parts of the country.

“However, following the conversation between the brothers, nothing was said or passed to the Bristol coaches of any sporting value, nor did it change the strategy in which we approached the game in any way, shape or form.”
