Are Harlequins Resorting To Drastic Training Methods?

Since John Kingston stepped up to the role of Director of Rugby, taking the place of the Italy-bound Conor O’Shea, Harlequins fans have been somewhat curious as to how the long-serving coach would act in his new position.

Well, due to an unfortunately worded tweet from Harlequins’ official account, it appears Kingston is certainly a hard taskmaster and somewhat ruthless in his training methods.

It’s something of a drastic move this close to the new season, but if the new Quins coaching set up wanted to make an immediate impact then this is definitely one way of doing it. Or it could just mean a lovely photo of the squad was taken straight after their training session…

Harlequins have been spending some time in San Francisco as part of a pre-season training camp. As Harlequins explained via their website:

“Arriving in San Francisco on Saturday 30th July, the club will spend the week training at the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club, departing back to the UK on Sunday 7th August.

“The tour, organised as part of Harlequins’ strategic partnership with USA Rugby, will allow the players and coaches, led by Academy and Global Development Director, Tony Diprose, to activate and engage with the local community, while helping to expand the sport in the USA and North California.”

Even though O’Shea has now gone on to pastures new, supporters will be hoping the decision to gently evolve the coaching set up and bring in Nick Easter as well rather than wholesale changes will pay dividends for them.
