Ronan O’Gara is currently a coach at French club Racing 92, but the former Munster, Ireland and Lions out-half has been widely expected to make a return to the country in the coming years, as he builds coaching experience.
During the Lions’ tour of New Zealand, Ireland will tour US and Japan to wind down the season.
According to a report in the Independent, O’Gara is set to join Joe Schmidt’s coaching team for the tour, along with Girvan Dempsey and Felix Jones.
RTÉ approached the IRFU on the issue, and the union stated that it “wouldn’t respond to such speculation”.
Ireland defence coach Andy Farrell will be on the Lions tour in June, but it is not expected that the aforementioned trio will be filling in that role.
O’Gara was linked with a job in Connacht as Pat Lam is departing at the end of the season. However, he signed a deal with the Parisian club to keep him in the French capital until 2019.
With uncertainty surrounding the future of Rassie Erasmus at Munster, it is been speculated that O’Gara will return home before the expiration of that contract, with a return to the province always likely at some point.
