UFC 208 went down as one of the most uninteresting pay-per-view cards in recent MMA history. However, there was one massive talking point after the main event.
Holy Holm took on Germaine de Randamie in the main event at UFC 208 in Brooklyn. With the inaugural women’s featherweight title on the line, both fighters slugged it out over the course of five rounds, with most fans scoring the fight for Holly in an online poll after the bout.
However, the judges the decision to score the bout for De Randamie was not the controversial aspect of the fight, it was the referee’s refusal to deduct a point from the Dutch woman.
De Randamie had committed two serious fouls during the course of the bout, striking her opponent after the buzzer in both the second and third rounds. However, despite the illegal strikes, referee Todd Anderson let ‘The Iron Lady’ off with a mere warning.
Commentating on the fight, Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier were in disbelief shouting on multiple occasions that the ref simply had to deduct a point. Given the final tally on the judges scorecards on the night, had the referee correctly performed his duty, the bout would have went down as a draw.
Now, coping with her third consecutive loss, Holly Holm has elected to take drastic measures by appealing the result of the fight on the basis of the referee’s failure to adequately perform his duties.
“We respectfully request the commission review referee Anderson’s failure to assess a foul and render a decision regarding a point deduction following Round 2, and failure to assess a foul and a point deduction following Round 3, and determine an appropriate result,” the complaint stated.
It’s unknown as of yet whether Holm will be successful or not with her appeal but, based on the footage above, it certainly seems like she has a strong case.
