Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson suffered the first knockout loss of his career in violent fashion on a bad night for Straight Blast Gym in Scotland.

Nelson’s teammate Charlie Ward was defeated in bizarre fashion during the prelims of Sunday night’s UFC Fight Night card at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, and it was left to the number 8 ranked welterweight to salvage the night for team SBG.

The 28-year-old was matched up against dangerous striker Santiago Ponzinibbio, who, boasting 13 KO’s prior to the bout, was riding a four fight win streak.

Though Gunni’s stellar jiu-jitsu game saw this pitched as a classic striker versus grappler match-up, Nelson decided to begin the bout with the improved punching that he has showcased in his most recent outings against Alan Jouban and Albert Jumenov.

The Icelandic star did have some early success in the striking exchanges, hurting Ponzinibbio on two occasions, but another exchange just two minutes in almost dropped him, as his opponent landed a fine right hand.

Nelson scrambled his way to the fence, but in trying to recover he was caught by a nasty straight left which ended the contest at 2:22 of the very first round.

Gunnar Nelson now moves to 16-3 in his MMA career.
