Gunnar Nelson On Conor McGregor’s Next Step If He Defeats Floyd Mayweather

SBG Ireland’s and Mjolnir MMA’s welterweight star Gunnar Nelson spoke recently about what he thinks the next move of his long-term training partner Conor McGregor will be if he does pull off the impossible and defeat the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather.

Gunnar Nelson for years now has been the dark horse of the UFC’s welterweight division. With his impressive run marred only by defeats to Rick Story and the technical wizard Demian Maia, Nelson’s standing at 170 is now going through something of a resurgence following his dominant UFC London victory over Alan Jouban.

Nelson certainly looked the part in that outing, mixing up his unorthodox karate with his impeccable grappling to come away with a 2nd round submission win over a guy in Jouban, who many had touted – and still tout – as a future title contender.

Now, despite rumours floating around that he will take on the expert-karateka himself, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in his next matchup, Nelson spoke to Submission Radio recently about a subject that he could well be considered a leading authority on, the thought-processes of his long-term training partner and friend, the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

With McGregor, of course, constantly linked to a potentially earth-shattering superfight with the unbeaten boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, Gunni gave us all his own take on what exactly the Irishman could do if he did pull off the impossible by handing ‘Money’ his first ever loss inside the boxing ring.

“You never know what he’s going to do next. If he beats Mayweather, I’m not sure that he will ever fight again, to be honest. I don’t know, but I could see him just floating off and doing something else crazy.”

“But otherwise, maybe he’ll fight Khabib [Nurmagomedov] or something next, if Khabib is in shape. I don’t know, there’s something wrong with [Khabib]’s kidneys or something after that cut. We’ll see. I don’t know what he’s going to do, but he’s just focusing on one thing at a time and right now it’s Floyd Mayweather and I’m looking forward to that myself.”

Few have given McGregor any chance in a crossover bout with Floyd but it can’t be denied at this stage that the man possesses legitimate knockout power in his hands and if he does, in fact, connect on the chin of 49-0 superstar then who knows, we could well witness the birth of the biggest star in the history of combat sports, there and then.
