Conor McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis had quite the weekend.
The Bellator welterweight was in McGregor’s corner for his lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in Las Vegas and was heavily involved in the brawl that ensued between the two sides following the bout.
After Khabib submitted McGregor midway through the fourth round, the Dagestani fighter threw his mouthguard away and leapt over the cage appearing to target Danis as a pull-apart brawl ensued.
Despite appearing to take a couple of shots in the brawl, Danis still managed to find the time to relax after the event in Las Vegas as featherweight contender Brian Ortega explained.
T-City told TMZ sports that he ran into Danis in a Vegas nightclub and was very surprised to see McGregor’s teammate amongst the revellers.
“First I was like, ‘Damn, what are you doing here – especially alone?’” Ortega recalled. “I was like, ‘This guy is a savage here.’
Ortega explained that Danis was trying to slightly keep a low profile but he was also full of praise for the jiu-jitsu standout who he said was “respectful”
“He was respectful,” Ortega said. “He said, ‘Hey man, you’re holding it down for the jiu-jitsu community. I admire you. I appreciate it.’
“He was cool about the whole situation.”
Although the pair seemed to hit it off quite well, Ortega explained that Danis remained relatively tight-lipped over the post-fight brawl which he was heavily involved in.
“He wouldn’t really tell me much,” Ortega said. “He was just like, ‘Yeah, man, (expletive) got crazy. These guys started throwing, I started throwing.’ One of his eyes was swollen. He was just like, ‘Yeah, man, I think they gave me a concussion, so he got down, too.”
Ortega and Holloway are scheduled to fight for the featherweight title at UFC 231, and despite Ortega not taking a side in the McGregor/Khabib feud, he outlined that he looked out for Danis as he exited the club.
“After that, he was going to walk out by himself, and I told my boy, I was like ‘Hey, man, make sure this guy gets out of here alright,’ because you know, there seemed to be some Russians in the club,” Ortega said with a laugh.
