MMA fans were left in shock on Saturday night as the undefeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk was stopped in the very first round of her UFC strawweight title defence by Rose Namajunas.
Heading into the bout, Namajunas was the heavy underdog with very few giving her a chance against the seemingly invincible champion. Joanna had a blemish-free record prior to UFC 217 and had already successfully defended her title on five occasions before she entered the Octagon in Madison Square Garden.
However, Jedrzejczyk was in for a rude awakening on Saturday night as the former champion was dropped twice in the very first round before eventually submitting to strikes on the canvas.
After the event, the 30-year-old was overwhelmed with emotion as she came to terms with her first defeat in the promotion.
Unaired footage from the moments that immediately followed the bout also revealed Jedrzejczyk’s reaction inside the cage with the former champion behaving admirably as she congratulated her opponent and silently wrapped her head around the events that had just transpired.
