Stephen Thompson wants to get his name right back into title-contention with a matchup against the legendary former-champion, Robbie Lawler.
Stephen Thompson’s clash with the rising-star Darren Till at UFC Liverpool last month amounted to an incredibly tactical affair, all things considered, and while he didn’t get the nod from the judges – he didn’t exactly lose too much of his shine either.
Till edged it on the scorecards but with a fight that close, nobody was ever going to be fully satisfied by the result.
Now, Thompson finds himself in something of a strange spot. Having failed to defeat Tyron Woodley on two occasions now, his chances of getting a third crack at the belt while ‘The Chosen One’ is in charge of the division is highly unlikely but with a new challenger in the form of Colby Covington just dying to get his chance, things could look very different by year’s end.
Getting a win in the mean-time, however, is something that is absolutely essential for his title aspirations.
Speaking on the Slip n’ Dip podcast, ‘Wonderboy’ made it clear that he is very interested in a matchup with Robbie Lawler – one that would potentially take place in Madison Square Garden when the UFC return there in November.
“I got fans all the time asking me ‘why don’t you fight Robbie Lawler?’ I think, I got a lot of respect for him and it would be a barnburner. He just stands there and wants to bang it out. I love fighting guys like that — without getting hit in the knee of course.
“Hopefully we can get that shot at MSG, that would be sick.” (via MMANytt.com)
Robbie Lawler was last seen in action when he came up short against Rafael dos Anjos over five-rounds late last year and while many have agreed that the ruthless former-champion’s best days are behind him, a matchup with Thompson could well be a stylistic clash for the ages.
