Alex Oliveira managed to rain on Carlos Condit’s parade as he locked in a second-round gullotine choke to take home the win at UFC Glendale last night.
Oh, how the once mighty have fallen!
Carlos Condit’s recent run moved to 2-7 in his last nine after last night where his short-notice replacement opponent Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira managed to sink in a tight gullotine choke early in the second.
‘Cowboy’ took the fight on short-notice after Matt Brown was forced to withdraw and despite the impressive nature of his win, it wasn’t an easy night by any stretch of the imagination. On the feet, the shots landed were few and far between with the fight mainly taking place in the grappling exchanges. Oliveira managed to power his way to several takedowns but from his back, Condit found himself able to sweep on more than one occasion before leaving his neck open just prior to the fight’s end.
Despite the lack of striking in the bout, it still just didn’t seem as though Condit has managed to find his true form since his return to the sport. The level of violence he was able to inflict on the former-champ Robbie Lawler in their UFC 195 Fight of the Year-winning brawl wasn’t to be seen in either his showing last night or in his original comeback matchup against Neil Magny.
Perhaps it’s too soon to suggest retirement for the Natural Born Killer but on the back of this latest performance, it does appear as though he is struggling to find his best self. With welterweight now boasting some of the finest talent on the roster, perhaps his title ambitions may well be out of his reach, but alas, his career to date has been one that has already solidified him among the greats of the game.
