Following the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 win over Wales on Monday, the FAI have revealed just how successful various Irish sides have been in the last three weeks.
Irish sides, both male and female from the underage set ups up have secured a phenomenal ten wins and two draws out of twelve matches played in the last three weeks.
These results are certainly encouraging for not only the coming weeks but also the long-term future.
Ireland’s u-21 and u-19 side in particular offer plenty of promise with Noel King’s charges top of their European Championship qualifying group despite it containing the strong outfits of Norway and Israel. Ireland managed four points last week when playing those opponents.
They play group favourites Germany in the New Year.
Colin Bell’s Irish women’s team also opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a win against Northern Ireland. The Girls in Green have looked promising since Bell took over and will be hoping to keep up their momentum.
It represents an exciting time for Irish football, given some periods of negativity over the last few years. With some luck, the senior side will be celebrating progression to the World Cup via the play-offs in what has been a fantastic autumn for football on the island.
