Clare have an excellent recent record against Limerick in the Munster Championship, beating them in each of the last three seasons at this stage.

While the margins of victory have tended to be narrow, Limerick’s poor showing in Division 4 this season suggests the hosts could struggle to live with their neighbours.

Limerick come into Saturday’s encounter with Clare with their confidence shot. A disappointing league campaign yielded only one victory (at home to Waterford) and one draw (away to London). Only Wicklow finished below them in Division 4.

One would need to go all the way back to the 2012 season for the last time Limerick have progressed beyond the quarter-final stage of the Munster Championship. Clare have accounted for them at this stage of the competition in each of the past three years.

It would be difficult not to have some sympathy for manager Billy Lee, who spent a frustrating winter desperately trying to recruit players to the inter-county set up after 18 senior players abandoned ship after the 2017 season.

The Limerick boss has said that a grand total of 53 players in the county failed to attend county trials.

All of which leaves the Shannonsiders in just about the toughest situation imaginable ahead of a meeting with Colm Collins’ impressive Clare side.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion to the top tier of the football league this season, Collins will be hoping his side can spring a surprise against Kerry in the Munster semi-final, presuming of course that they firstly overcome a hapless Limerick.

Limerick have been boosted by the news that Iain Corbett has returned from a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon and will likely feature against Clare on Saturday.

Verdict: Clare by 6 points.
