Kilkenny See Off Brave Cork Fightback In Littlewoods Camogie League Final

Brian Barry reports from Nowlan Park as Kilkenny were crowned Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 champions.

Kilkenny 0-15 Cork 1-11.

A huge crowd descended on Nowlan Park for a mammoth doubleheader in the Marble City today. First up was the meeting of Cork and Kilkenny in the Littlewoods Camogie League final, and there was never going to be any love lost between the two sides.

With both main stands almost packed out for the second half, Kilkenny enjoyed a sizeable home support throughout, and they made it count.

Denise Gaule, Katie Power, Miriam Walshe and Jenny Clifford all found the target with ease in the first half, as they raced into a seven-point lead at the break.

The Rebelettes gave themselves a lifeline in the second half, as Orla Cronin lobbed Jacqui Frisby in the Kilkenny goal to raise a green flag. However, Kilkenny bounced back admirably, with Walshe and Aoife Doyle pointing to maintain their sizeable advantage.

10 minutes later, Cronin stole in again behind the Kilkenny rearguard, and after losing her stick elected to kick it. Unfortunately for Cork, it went wide. Nonetheless, advantage was being played and Orla Cotter pointed the resulting free, closing the gap to just three, 0-15 to 1-09.

On 53 minutes, goalkeeper Aoife Murray received a straight red card, with Denise Gaule seeing her penalty saved. Nonetheless, it was a cruel blow for Cork as they chased the game late on. As the clock ticked on, Linda Collins reduced the gap to two with a minute remaining.

When Orla Cotter pointed a free with a minute left in the four minutes added on, there was a real buzz around Nowlan Park as the game hung in the balance. However, the Cats were able to hold out, on a scoreline of 0-15 to 1-11.
