David Meyler Sends Classy Message To Injured Cork Minor Star Brian Turnbull

David Meyler has sent a classy message of encouragement to Cork minor hurling sensation Brian Turnbull who recently tore his ACL.

Meyler wasn’t long off the pitch after giving a heroic captain’s performance in the Republic of Ireland’s epic win over Wales on Monday night before he was wishing a dispirited local young sports star well in his recovery from the dreaded injury which he has personally been through himself more than once.

Turnbull was named Minor Hurler of The Year at the inaugural Minor All-Star awards sponsored by Electric Ireland earlier this week. The Cork minor star lit up the minor championship this summer with dazzling displays for the Rebels en route to a narrow All-Ireland final defeat.

Turnbull really endeared himself to the Cork faithful with his consistently brilliant performances through the championship campaign in which he finished top scorer. The Douglas youngster has been earmarked as a certain star for the future in the famed red jersey on Leeside.

However, just a couple of weeks after that disappointing loss to Galway in Croke Park, Turnbull suffered a devastating injury setback when football training with his club. He ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and will require surgery and a subsequent lengthy stint on the sidelines.

While the initial shock and pessimism surrounding such an injury is to be expected, there is no doubting the fact that players do indeed come back even stronger than ever before having been through the strict rehabilitation process involved in the recovery.

One of the many players who has lived to tell such a tale is Cork’s own Colm Spillane who was a top performer for the senior side this year on their march to Munster glory. He reached out to Brian in the days after the extent of his injury was learned to ensure him that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Another is Meyler.

Check out the tweet the Hull City midfielder and former Blackrock club hurler sent when he was informed of Turnbull’s misfortune.

To which the 18-year-old responded:

To point out such a feat, having recovered from two devastating cruciate injuries, to Brian mere hours after arguably the performance of his life in Cardiff is a testament to Meyler. The stand-in skipper of the national side in the absence of Seamus Coleman, whose father John is currently hot favourite to be appointed the next Cork senior hurling manager, does not forget where he comes from.
