Ex-Liverpool Players Pile In To Criticise Current Team’s Defensive Plight

during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on October 22, 2017 in London, England.

Liverpool’s current defensive plight has drawn the ire not just of the fans, but also from those that used to wear the famous red shirt.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went down 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in a performance so heinous, Dejan Lovren was taken off after just half an hour.

The manager has since said that although Lovren was the one hooked, the Croatian was not fully to blame for the capitulation with defensive partner Joel Matip seen as equally culpable in the eyes of the German.

Liverpool’s defensive issues, by no means a new problem but a nut that Klopp has yet to crack, have provoked a strong backlash from Reds supporters, with several ex-Liverpool players also joining in with the strong criticism.

Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend, feels that Liverpool’s issues at the back stem from the fact that Klopp is essentially still using the same defenders as Brendan Rodgers, and that he can’t expect to get any more from them than his predecessor did:

John Arne Riise, who played at Anfield for seven years and is very vocal on his former club’s performances on social media , couldn’t even bring himself to hammer them today – instead deciding to watch the Hangover films to take his mind off the result:

Daniel Agger, meanwhile, was slightly more subtle in his approach. Rather than saying anything himself, he retweeted a rather damning statistic from Sky Sports:

In fact, things have become so bad for Klopp and Liverpool that Djimi Traore, scorer of that infamous own goal against Burnley and yet somehow ending that season as a Champions League winner, felt confident enough to have a pop:

It wasn’t just midfielders either, as former Reds David Thompson and John Aldridge also felt the need to speak their minds:

Klopp, the current side and the former players mentioned above will all be hoping for a much better showing at the back in next weekend’s Premier League clash at home to Huddersfield:
