Christian Eriksen completed his hattrick to effectively deny Ireland any hope of competing in Russia next summer.
Martin O’Neill went for broke at halftime when he sent on Wes Hoolahan and Aiden McGeady for the second half but they didn’t have the desired impact as the Danes scored a further two goals through the boot of Eriksen to pour cold water on a night which started so positively for Ireland.
His first goal was an absolute screamer which he smashed in off the underside of the crossbar which left Darren Randolph with no chance.
His second came on 62 minutes when he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and side-footed the ball into the top corner – another sublime finish.

His third and his side’s fourth goal was probably the worst from an Irish perspective and it’s one which Stephen Ward won’t want to see again. An innocuous ball was played into the box and all Ward had to do was put his foot through it, instead, he tried to take a touch and ended up playing the ball into the path of Eriksen who smashed it home beyond Randolph.

A night to forget for Irish football.
