Robbie Keane has been a free agent since his contract with the LA Galaxy ran out on January 1st after six seasons in the MLS.
The Dubliner has been looking for a new club ever since and now may finally have found his next home. Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp has today told Sky Sports that he is interested in bringing 37-year-old Keane to St Andrew’s.
“Robbie Keane is a proper player; a great professional and infectious character.
“He knows he wouldn’t play every week but just to have him around… I’m sure he’d fight tooth and nail to get a regular place in the team.”
Redknapp also confirmed he’s interested in signing 36-year-old Ashley Cole and 32-year-old Stewart Downing with the hope they could bring some much-needed experience to a Blues side aiming for a playoff spot next season.
Keane bagged 104 goals in 165 games for the Galaxy and was named MLS MVP in 2014. He retired from international football last August, signing off with a memorable strike in a 4-0 win over Oman. The well-executed volley brought him level with Gerd Muller on 68 goals for his country.
The former Spurs striker may not have played competitive football since November but there’s little risk in offering him a short-term contract and could yet prove a great signing considering his phenomenal goalscoring record.
