How The Irish Have Fared So Far In The Third Round Of The FA Cup

Daryl Murphy, Tom Field, Matt Doherty and Lukas Jutkievicz were all on target in today’s third round FA Cup ties with a number of other Irishmen also in action.

Murphy earned a rare start for the Magpies having struggled for game time this season since joining from Ipswich Town. The Waterford man opened the scoring from close range after just five minutes against Birmingham City on Saturday.

However, Ireland-eligible striker Jutkiewicz responded with a left-footed shot to draw the Blues level. The former Burnley and Everton striker scored his ninth goal in what has so far been an impressive season for the 27-year-old. The game ended 1-1.

Ireland underage international Tom Field scored two goals from left wing back as Brentford hammered Eastleigh 5-1. Field is a regular for the Bees and will hope to catch the eye of Martin O’Neill, who is short on left-backs.

Another Irish full-back, Matt Doherty, scored for Wolves as they surprised Stoke City with a 2-0 win.

Richie Towell also made a rare appearance for Brighton against MK Dons, with his side running out 1-0 winners. The ex-Dundalk man will hope to gain more game time following a steady performance for the Seagulls.

Preston are in action against Arsenal on Saturday evening with a host of Irish internationals expected to feature for Preston. Greg Cunningham and Aiden McGeady start with Daryl Horgan expected to make his debut off the bench.
