It was in the 2008/09 season, where Liverpool went to Old Trafford and returned to Merseyside with all three points following an emphatic 4-1 victory.
Among the goals for Liverpool were Fernando Torres, who levelled the game shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo gave the hosts the lead, Steven Gerrard, from the spot, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena sealed the win in injury time.
Rafa Benitez’s side were also helped with an outstanding performance from cult hero defender, Sami Hyypia, as they looked to stop United, who were on course to win yet another league title.
The game is best remembered for the performance of Torres, who was a thorn in the side of United – and Nemanja Vidic in particular – all afternoon. Also, the free-kick from Aurelio was one of the highlights for Liverpool in a season that ended in the all too familiar so-close-but-yet-so-far manner.
The Red Devils, despite the defeat, did end up as champions, under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson. They finished four points ahead of Liverpool who had to be content with second place.
Liverpool were in free scoring form that season and comfortably the most clinical team in front of goal, netting 77 times, although Gerrard, Torres and Dirk Kuyt were all in the top ten scorers in the league that season.
The teams on that day eight years ago were:
Man Utd: Van der Sar, O’Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Carrick (Giggs 74), Anderson (Scholes 73), Park (Berbatov 74), Rooney, Tevez.
Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Skrtel, Hyypia, Aurelio, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard (El Zhar 90), Riera (Dossena 67), Torres (Babel 81).
