How A Tongue-Lashing From Jurgen Klopp Could Turn Liverpool’s Fortunes Around

Liverpool’s defence has come in for a lot of criticism so far this season as the Anfield club are already 12 points behind league leaders Manchester City.

The Reds have scored less and conceded more goals than anyone else in the top six but it is the back-line that has been on the receiving end from critics and supporters alike.

While not paying too much heed to people on the outside, it was harsh words from manager Jurgen Klopp which really resonated with the players.

Quoted in the Irish Examiner, defender Joel Matip said:

“We know we had a lot of problems. I made a lot of problems, I was at fault, I made a number of mistakes, and of course, I am not happy.

“We know we did it wrong and he (Klopp) didn’t hold back, he said it directly.”

The Cameroon international said that these words from Klopp were necessary – and that the players have the advice on board.

With the defence struggling so much, Liverpool fans will be hoping that this will be a turning point for the club this season:

“You have to speak about these things directly, honestly, and that is what he did.

“He said it was not good enough – he spoke very honestly about the things that have to change, very directly, but after this he said we carry on and try to prepare for the next game.”

After keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Huddersfield, Liverpool’s next game is against Maribor in the Champions League mid-week, before facing West Ham in their last match before the international break.

After a humbling defeat to Spurs earlier this month, these harsh words from the manager may be exactly what the Anfield club needed as they look to get back into the top four.
