Latest James McCarthy Development A Major Worry For Martin O’Neill And Ireland

Martin O’Neill will be waiting anxiously on news from Everton after James McCarthy was left out of the Toffees squad for their Premier League clash with Leicester this Sunday afternoon.

McCarthy made his season debut in the midweek League Cup clash with Chelsea and a return to full fitness would have been great news for the Republic of Ireland ahead of their World Cup play-off with Denmark.

McCarthy has a hamstring issue – which led to him missing out on Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at the King Power Stadium.

The midfielder had been named in O’Neill’s squad for the pair of matches against the Danes on November 11 and 14, however, his participation in these crucial games is now in serious doubt.

Speaking earlier in the week, O’Neill said he had been impressed with McCarthy’s performance in the Cup game:

“I was at the game (against Chelsea) he played for an hour. It’s a good hour for him against very good opposition. He seemed to be alright, which is good for us.”

Meanwhile, John Walters was left out of that squad but the Irish management are said to be hopeful that he may be available.

Should Walters prove his fitness, it would ease the pain of McCarthy’s absence.

Conor McNamara of the BBC asked David Unsworth about the injury and the Blues caretaker manager said that he will discuss the matter with O’Neill.
