The Spanish FA have sacked manager Julen Lopetegui after he withheld the news that he was replacing Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.
The decision came after Lopetegui was announced as the new head coach of Real Madrid yesterday, with reports circulating in Spain this morning that the FA were furious with the manager and were set to sack him.
A press conference was held to announce the decision with President of the Spanish FA Luis Rubiales saying that he cannot accept how the former national coached acted.
“We have to decided to fire the national coach. What we have achieved in getting here is due in great part to him, and we must thank him and wish him luck. The Spanish national team is the team of all the Spaniards. We only found out just five minutes before the announcement that he was leaving for Madrid. There is a way that you must act. Julen has worked in a great way with the team, but we cannot accept how he has acted in this case.”
Spain begin their World Cup in just two days against Portugal and it is unclear yet who will replace Lopetegui in charge of La Roja but according to reports, Spain’s sporting director Fernando Hierro and Spanish Under-21 coach Albert Celades would be in the frame to step in.
Lopetegui had a 70% win rate as head coach of Spain and had not lost any of his 20 games in charge.
