José Mourinho Updates Fearful Fans Over Ibrahimovic Illness Ahead Of Crucial Clash With Liverpool

Manchester United continued their exceptional run of form on Tuesday with a 2-0 defeat of Hull in the League Cup semi-final first leg, this time relying on Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini to provide the goals in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

In what was United’s ninth straight victory in all competitions, Mourinho had earlier surprised fans and pundits with a team sheet that did not include the always in-form Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

With 18 goals so far this season, the Swede has been Mourinho’s go-to man for consistent goal scoring and it was expected he would feature against Hull City, having been an unused substitute at the weekend in the FA Cup demolition of Reading.

Ahead of the game however it was revealed Ibrahimovic had not made the trip to Old Trafford for the game due to an unspecified illness.

News of a potentially sick Zlatan for the trip to Anfield on Sunday sparked fear among fans but following the defeat of Hull, manager Mourinho did his best to reassure the masses by clarifying that he expects his striker to be fit in time for the biggest game of their season to date.

While this is not a resounding confirmation by Mourinho, the hope is that United’s top scorer this term can return to terrorise the Liverpool defence. Should he fail to recover in time, the performance against Hull should give fans cause to hope as with goals from Mata and Fellaini, near missess from Rooney, Rashford, Mkhitaryan and a sublime free kick that wobbled the post from Pogba, it is clear that United are not short of attacking options.

Right now United are on the crest of a wave that sees them unbeaten in 15 games. Full of confidence and swagger, the trip to Anfield will now be viewed with far more optimism, with an eye on three points and the ignition of their Premier League title aspirations.
