Arsenal look set to sign Wales U19 sensation Ethan Ampadu, despite the 16-year-old’s trail period with fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the Exeter City midfielder had a trial spell with the Merseyside club when he was just 14 and despite the Premier League side’s interest in signing the teenager, he chose instead to return to the League 2 side.
Two years on and it appears that Liverpool are set to miss out on the young international for a second time as Arsenal have become the front runners in acquiring his services.
Chelsea and Manchester United were also reported to be interested in the defensive midfielder, however, the fact that his father Kwame works as a coach in the Arsenal academy gives the London club a distinct advantage.
Though having only just turned 16 in September, he has already made ten appearances for the Exeter senior side and is on the radar of Wales boss Chris Coleman. In fact, Ampadu was invited to Wales’ per-Euro 2016 training camp in the summer where he trained alongside the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey.
Arsenal have a long track record of signing youthful prospects. Under Arsène Wenger the likes of Hector Bellerin and Theo Walcott joined the club young and have gone on to become key players in Wenger’s title aspirations.
With the January transfer window a mere four weeks away, it might not be long before the young Ampadu returns to the Premier League, this time in the red and white of Arsenal.
