Sean Maguire’s done it again, this time against Championship table-toppers Cardiff City.
At least, the Welsh side were on top at kick-off. Thanks to Maguire and co., Preston North End are set to send Leeds United to the summit.
Having won just two of six league games so far, it was important for Preston to do so. Luckily for the Lilywhites, their new signing from Cork City has a point to prove, and is doing so with his second goal in two games.
Ireland’s woes in front of goal during the international break have seen many clamour of the 23-year-old’s inclusion in the senior squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Wales next month. A classic striker’s goal tonight has helped Maguire’s case no end.
The 71st minute saw the ball arrive to the Irishman at the edge of the box.
He calmly steered the ball away from two Cardiff defenders, and with the cool confidence that saw him plunder 52 goals for Cork City, Maguire took a second to compose himself and fired the ball past the ‘keeper at his near post, much to the delight of the combined Preston and Ireland faithful.
