The first Milan derby of the season didn’t disappoint in the entertainment stakes.
Though Juventus have had a stranglehold on Italian football – having won the Serie A six times in a row – the famed derby north east of Turin still captivates football fans worldwide. Both Inter and AC Milan have struggled in the face of the Bianconeri domination, but Sunday night’s fixture between the two stole the show.
AC were the only ones capable of achieving European football last season (as their sixth place finish earned them a Europa League berth), but on this occasion, their rivals (seventh in 2016/17) earned the win.
Mauro Icardi was first on the score-sheet with a counter attacking goal in the 28th minute at the San Siro.
The Rossoneri didn’t reply until the 56th minute, but it was worth the wait as Suso, finding himself in acres of space following an Inter mishap in defence, went it alone.
Icardi got his second just minutes later with a disgusting finish from an Ivan Perisic cross.
Giacomo Bonaventura tied the gameonce again with ten minutes left on the clock before drama ensued in the ninetieth minute. Ricardo Rodriguez was judged to have brought down Danilo D’Ambrosio in the box; a decision many felt was the wrong one.
It was left to Icardi to step up to the spot for a late, controversial win.
The win leaves Inter in second in Serie A, while AC languish in tenth, already twelve points behind leaders Napoli.
