The Revierderby never fails to deliver, and with both Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund battling for automatic Champions League qualification, today couldn’t afford to be any different.
The last time these two rivals met, Dortmund, playing at the Westfalenstadion, blew a four goal lead, allowing Schalke to earn a point.
The man who got the equaliser in added time was defender Naldo, and it was none other than the Brazilian who made a major impact in the return tie yet again.
Still smarting from a crushing 6-0 defeat to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich last month, Dortmund went a goal down today in the second half via Evgeni Konoplyanka after a storming run from Daniel Caligiuri.
The midfielder also earned an assist for the strike that killed off the game (and almost killed off the goal-net). A one-two allowed the Dortmund players to quickly close down the ball, but it was no use given the speed and accuracy of Naldo’s sensational strike, his seventh league goal of the season.

Even some of the Dortmund faithful couldn’t hide their appreciation.
Sometimes you just have to stand up and applaud. That was a stunning finish by Naldo. No way back for Borussia Dortmund now #S04BVB

The 2-0 win puts Schalke in second in the Bundesliga table, although they are still an entire twenty points behind leaders Bayern Munich with just four games left. Bayer Leverkusen and the under-fire Dortmund round out the top four, four points behind today’s victors.
