Chelsea have submitted a bid for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, according to Turkish-Football.
The 22 year old is highly sought after having previously been linked with Manchester United also. However, having parted with ways with Oscar for a payday of £60 million, (not to mention John Obi Mikel’s transfer to China) Chelsea are very much in a position to spend this January.
The actual monetary value of such a bid isn’t disclosed by Turkish Football, but such a move would certainly complement Antonio Conté 3-4-3 formation. The style of play calls for ample attacking midfielders, while the central midfield positions are primarily left to the ultra physical pairing of Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kanté. This left Oscar somewhat caught between two stools, and leaves Chelsea in need of further attacking options.
The situation has seen Chelsea linked with Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez although recent speculation suggests that such a move won’t happen anytime soon. As a result, the London club are very much back on the market and Calhanoglu looks exactly the guise of player that they need.
At just 22 he’s certainly young enough to benefit hugely from playing alongside players the ilk of Eden Hazard and Pedro. The German-born midfielder has become renowned for his free kicks and crisp ball-striking ability in the Bundesliga, another parallel with Rodriguez. His five goals and six assists so far this season indeed paint him in a positive light, and should he complete the move to Chelsea, their title challenge would appear to be in near unstoppable condition.
