Phil Jones has outlined exactly how crucial he believes a win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final will be to his team’s confidence next season.
This year’s Premier League season is now done and dusted and while the eventual victors Manchester City managed to steamroll the competition with a century of points, already the anticipation for next year’s campaign is growing – given the crop of new talent that could well emerge at this summer’s World Cup.
And though the bulk of the attention is now fixated on June’s tournament, one major fixture in the English domestic game is still yet to be played.
Saturday will see Manchester United meet Chelsea in the final of the FA Cup in Wembley and while both teams will no doubt be watching enviously as Liverpool attempt to win the Champions League the following weekend, the match still has huge significance for each side’s season as a whole.
Phil Jones spoke to Eurosport in a recent interview and doubled down on the fact that a win could pay massive dividends for the team’s confidence when things get started next season:
“It will be our last game of the season, if you win that, you finish on a positive note and you go into the next season feeling confident, ready to go and ready to battle again for the title.
“I really don’t think we’re far away. In another season we might have been challenging. Sometimes you’ve got to hold your hands up and say that Man City have done ever so well to win the league this year, take nothing away from them.
“When I was younger I used to get really nervous before games, so much so that you are almost throwing up,
“Now I am used to it, I know what to expect. It is exciting – it’s not every day you get to play in an FA Cup final.”
