Two High Profile Sides Missed Out On World Cup Qualification Overnight

Chile have failed to qualify for the World Cup, after the Copa America champions finished in sixth spot in the South American qualification table.

Alexis Sanchez and Co. entered the final round of games in one of the automatic qualification spots, but a 3-0 loss to Brazil, coupled with Argentina’s 1-3 win away to Ecuador and Peru’s draw with Colombia turned things around.

This means that Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Colombia are heading for Russia, with Peru facing a play-off.

Argentina were the ones in trouble heading into the final round of games, but a certain Lionel Messi came up with a hat-trick to book the 2014 runners-up a spot in the finals.

Meanwhile, USA also missed out on qualification, for the first time since 1986. Bruce Arena’s side fell to Trinidad & Tobago on a scoreline of 2-1 to ensure that they will be missing out on another odyssey.

This means that Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama are heading to the World Cup, with the latter making their debut. Meanwhile, Honduras face Australia in the play-off to determine the final side.

23 teams have now qualified for the finals, with the last few spots up for grabs over the next month.
