Manchester United travelled to Basel tonight knowing just a point would secure their all but guaranteed qualification to the knockout stages to the Champions League, whereas a win would see them top the group with a game to spare.
It was a disappointing night in Switzerland for them.
Given the fact that United dispatched of the Swiss side in a comfortable 3-0 win in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford earlier in this group campaign and their 4-1 hammering of Newcastle at the weekend, Jose Mourinho’s side would have been fancied to come away with another three points tonight.
What transpired was quite a dull affair and one which will see United rue missed chances. A late goal saw the home side clinch all three points on the night.
Far from impressed, the Red Devil’s faithful voiced their displeasure at being unable to break down the Basel defence and the conceding of the 89th minute winner.

#MUFC we deserve this humiliation! Thank you Mourinho!

Deserved that. We’ve been absolutely shit in the second half. Attitude wasn’t right from the start of it. Embarrassing

Shocking performance in the second half#MUFC

Basel deserved that. Too much anti-football from #MUFC

Along with Mourinho, right-back Matteo Darmian took the brunt of the criticism from the Twitter population of United supporters.
When Darmian touches the football…. pic.twitter.com/jVGPLCzlUU

Absolutely no surprise the goal comes down United's right. Basel should've been targeting Darmian from the start. He's an utter liability. #mufc

There you go, and what do we do after we concede? Go straight on the attack. I never want to see Blind or Darmian play for this club again, imagine using them as fullbacks with their lack of pace. Embarrassing!!

Darmian is horrendous at times. Like watching a scared 10 year old.

Deserve that for their second half performance. Darmian not a Manchester United Player

Another cause for concern amongst Red Devils’ supporters appears to be how to manage the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. While the Swede undoubtedly increases the strength in depth of the squad ten-fold when available, where does he fit in this current team? Can he play alongside Romelu Lukaku, or is it one or the other?
Ibrahimovic was introduced as a second half substitute tonight on place of Anthony Martial. The 36-year-old played up top, forcing Lukaku into a wider position on the right.
Hate to blame Mourinho, but he's at fault here. Sacrificed Martial and we had no right winger for 20 minutes just to fit in Zlatan & Lukaku.

I’m sorry but you can’t play Zlatan and Lukaku together makes us more predictable and we have the worst fullbacks in world football ?
— Steven Morgan (@Stevenmorgan27) November 22, 2017
I hate to admit it but United deserved to lose the match. Mr Mourinho needs to think of subbing Lukaku, instead of Martial, for Zlatan.
— Jeffe. (@MelvinNkwe) November 22, 2017
This Lukaku-Zlatan partnership is not working. The earlier we stop the better @ManUtd
— Mr. Onasis (@1onakofi) November 22, 2017
We will continue to suffer as long as Mourinho keeps playing Lukaku as a right winger when ever Zlatan is on. Either play Zlatan behind him as a 10 with Wingers by their sides or choose one to be your striker.
— 20 (@Pogbalite) November 22, 2017
As soon as Zlatan is fully fit, Mourinho is starting him ahead of Lukaku. Lukaku’s link/hold up play is absolutely woeful and it’s a necessity for a Mourinho team
