Willie Monroe Jr. Issues Angry Response To Incident Involving Billy Joe Saunders’ Son

Willie Monroe Jr. has threatened to sue Billy Joe Saunders, the Englishman’s promoter Frank Warren and even the British Boxing Board of Control over a bizarre incident that took place on Friday.

Monroe challenges Saunders for his WBO middleweight title at the Copper Box Arena in London tonight, but at yesterday’s weigh-ins it was the fists of Saunders’ son that the American had to deal with.

As the fighters posed for the media after their respective trips to the scales, young Stevie stepped in between them. Monroe subsequently gave Stevie a pat on the head, prompting the boy to lash out at him with a punch to a rather delicate area and a follow-up kick, before he was dragged away.

The elder Saunders didn’t bat an eyelid and simply continued to flex for the cameras of the press. Afterwards, however, he defended his son’s actions on Twitter.

Hours later, Monroe himself took to Twitter, stating that he intends to file suit against Saunders, Warren and the BBBofC unless he is “compensated something for being punched and kicked in the balls.”

“I’ve been trying to not do face-offs and get into any confrontation the whole time I’ve been here because I know Saunders wants to sabotage the fight,” added the Rochester, New York native. “Frank Warren kept insisting that we do so and look what happened.”

“They said I didn’t wanna face-off because I was scared. The only thing I was scared of is them trying to find a way to weasel out of the fight.”

Monroe, whose only two professional defeats have come against notoriously dangerous journeyman Darnell Boone and marauding middleweight knockout artist Gennady Golovkin, went on to claim that he has been subjected to “gypsy threats and racial slurs” during the build-up to the contest.

“That’s not something a fighter should have to deal with, especially in 2017,” he added.

“I will sue if something isn’t done about this and my team and lawyers fully have my back.  So to Frank Warren and to Billy and the BBBofC for allowing this to happen, we will have to hash this out one way or another. Had the shoe been on the other foot, you guys would try to hand me out to dry.”

Billy Joe Saunders vs. Willie Monroe Jr. will air live on Boxnation in the U.K. and Ireland, with coverage beginning at 8.30 p.m. tonight. Also on the card is red-hot heavyweight prospect Daniel Dubois and big-punching light-heavyweight Anthony Yarde.
